BELLOWS FALLS — Experimental pop collective SOOL, described by the Boston Globe as one of “the cleverest and most idiosyncratic bands” around, is a musically schizophrenic hodge-podge of experimental curiosities that you can dance to.
SOOL has been recording and making music since 1994, traversing genres in a “pin-the-tail-on-the-cosmic-monkey” approach. Their music has been featured in independent films, TV shows, and international ads.
Underlying any preposterousness is the fact that these are top-notch players who happen to enjoy getting weird.
SOOL, which only plays live sporadically, is Kevin Quinn and Neal Spaulding of the eighties underground psychedelic-pop band The Dead Monkeys, plus musician / producer / studio-rat Pete Weiss. For this show, the original drummer of The Dead Monkeys, Ken O’Keefe — who lives in Japan — joins the fun. It’s The Dead Monkeys original lineup plus Pete Weiss, or the SOOL original lineup plus Ken O’Keefe. A win either way.
This will be their first show of a tiny tour. It will be louder than most shows at Stage 33 Live. Dancing will be encouraged.

Grant Peeples and Fred Gillen Jr at Stage 33 Live
BELLOWS FALLS — Grant Peeples is darkly hilarious and dead serious, often at the same time. Fred Gillen Jr is a globetrotting, truth-telling troubadour. Each takes a different path to the same destination.
Grant tours coast to coast and is a regular performer at The Woody Guthrie Folk Festival, the 30A Songwriters Festival, and The Florida Folk Festival. He’s the recipient of the Focus Foundation Award for Creative Excellence, which cited the “humor, compassion, and wisdom of his songs,” and their “unflinching social insight and cultural acuity.” He’s credited with eleven studio albums. He’s published three books of poetry.
Tallahassee born and raised, life started mostly simple and then got increasingly complicated. He started writing songs. He moved to Nashville. He left Nashville a year later. He got himself a night club and booked everyone from BB King to the Judds, The Temptations to George Straight, Jerry Lee Lewis to Dionne Warwick, Bonnie Raitt to Jerry Jeff Walker. He went broke in the night club business. He moved to a remote island in the Caribbean off the Miskito Coast of Nicaragua and stayed there for more than a decade before getting the itch back and a $100 guitar. He’s been playing every day and writing songs ever since. A self-described “tree-hugger that watches NASCAR,” Grant is known for his axe-sharp socio-political tunes, raucous humor, and heart-gigging ballads that keep an ever-critical eye on American culture and identity.
Fred Gillen Jr has released eleven acclaimed full-length albums, and has performed all over the U.S. and Europe. His live performances are spontaneous and full of storytelling, and he enjoys audience participation. His songs have been featured on ABC’s All My Children, NPR’s Car Talk, and CMJ’s New Music Marathon Sampler. His version of Woody Guthrie’s I Ain’t Got No Home was featured on Pete Remembers Woody, a collection of Pete Seeger’s spoken stories about Woody Guthrie. Besides playing with his heroes like Pete, he’s opened for such great artists as Merle Haggard, Todd Rundgren, and the David Bromberg Big Band. His songs incorporate elements of a huge swath of folk, rock, roots, and Americana music, and though he covers a wide variety of lyric topics, his over-arching message is simple: “we are all in this together.”
Grant Peeples and Fred Gillen Jr will perform at Stage 33 Live, 33 Bridge Street in Bellows Falls, Vermont, on August 18, 2024, at 6:00 PM. Tickets are $20 in advance through stage33live.com or at the door. Advance tickets guarantee entry. Seating is limited! The event will be recorded and filmed.

Global jazz by the highly regarded Julian Gerstin Sextet at Stage 33 Live, 33 Bridge Street in Bellows Falls, VT, on Sunday, September 29, 2024, at 7:00 PM. Julian Gerstin Sextet at Stage 33 Live
BELLOWS FALLS — Julian Gerstin has spent a lifetime playing music of the Caribbean, Africa, the Middle East, and the U.S. — funk, R&B, and jazz. He’s lived and studied in Martinique, Cuba and Ghana, mastering dozens of percussion instruments and hundreds of traditional rhythms. On a given song you might hear him playing congas, jawbone, an enormous beaded shaker, or the tanbou drum of Martinique on which he sits and uses his heel to change the pitch.
Gerstin founded the Sextet to bring his wide range of instruments and influences to a jazz setting, where they serve as a platform for his fellow musicians’ creativity. The group includes some of New England’s most creative talents: clarinet virtuoso Anna Patton; versatile trumpeter Don Anderson; pianist Eugene Uman, who like Julian ranges across traditions and from funky grooves to experimentalism; bassist Wes Brown, whose career spans gigs with early jazz master Earl “Fatha” Hines to avant-gardists like Wadada Leo Smith and Anthony Braxton; Ben James, who was John Tchicai’s drummer for several years and can both swing and go wild.
This is global jazz: music with lively Caribbean drums and sparkling trumpet, velvety clarinet and muscular piano. Music by turns lyrical and humorous, intense and peaceful, grooving and thoughtful, and always surprising.
“Global sensibilities on full display… Infusing jazz composition and instrumentation with his worldly orientation and rhythmic arsenal, Gerstin teases out the African and Caribbean elements so prevalent in jazz.” — JazzIz Magazine
“Full of danceable grooves, along with swirling irresistible ensemble playing and strong solos that are easy to listen to but far from being easy listening music… A magical musical stew.” — Ron Weinstock, Jazz and Blues Report

Jon Langford and Sally Timms with Josh Kantor, plus Wojcicki: Old punks with acoustic guitars at Stage 33 Live
BELLOWS FALLS — Jon Langford is a Welsh-born-and-raised rabble-rouser, painter, and punk rock pioneer. He was a founding member of the Mekons when it formed at the University of Leeds in 1977 from the emerging British punk scene, and is a Mekon to this day. Since the ’80s, he’s been one of the leaders in incorporating folk and country music into punk rock.
Among Langford’s dizzying array of musical side projects have been the Three Johns with John Hyatt and John Phillip Brennan, and the alt-country-punk Waco Brothers. He’s been in more bands than you have digits, even if you were born with a few extras. Langford is also a prolific and respected visual artist best known for his striking portraits of famous and forgotten figures from the dawn of country music.
Sally Timms, who grew up outside of Leeds, is also a Mekon, having joined the band in the band in 1985. She’s released a number of solo albums as well, and has collaborated on a wide range of diverse projects from voice acting to performing with Kathy Acker in her lesbian pirate operetta Pussy, King of the Pirates. Her singing voice has been described as alluring and powerful, and her speaking voice as a caustic English drawl.
Jon and Sally are bringing popular Boston keyboard player Josh Kantor with them to side on accordion. He’s a member of The Split Squad, a supergroup featuring former members of Blondie, The Plimsouls, and The Fleshtones, and the list of other acts he’s played with is wide and deep. He also happens to be the organist for Red Sox home games at Fenway Park.
Wojcicki is the musical vehicle for Matt Sharff, a refugee of the late ’70s / early ’80s NYC punk scene, when he performed at storied venues like CBGB and Max’s Kansas City. His music betrays the influences of rock and roll, Americana, punk, and prog. He’s shared stages with Emmylou Harris, The Jayhawks, Bill Kirchen, Roky Erikson, NRBQ, Richard Lloyd, The Misfits, and Bernie Sanders among others, and has recorded and performed with Adam Yauch (Beastie Boys), T-Bone Wolk (Hall & Oates), Buddy Cage (New Riders of the Purple Sage), Jon Carroll (Starlight Vocal Band), and more.

“Dana has a poet’s eye for beauty & detail, a blue’s man’s soul, and a songbird’s gift. He is remarkable.” — Hayes Carll
“The Album is 5 Star Grammy Material.” — Shake Russell
“Genius.” — Tom Tranchilla, KPFT Radio
“Blown Away. The title cut! What can I say but ‘Meow’.” — Marilyn Rea Beyer of Midnight Special, WFMT
“The Ghost of Tucumcari earns its right to be selected as the haunting title track. Cooper makes it clear that not only does he know how to collaborate, but he also has extensive industry experience.” — Will Phoenix, Newsbreak
Dana’s story is one of true perseverance and lifelong dedication to his craft.
His musical journey began at the young age of two when his father would prop him on the bar to sing along with the jukebox. Coming from Missouri, Cooper was surrounded by the sounds of classic country and folk music from an early age. He quickly became enamored with the guitar and taught himself to play and to harmonize vocally by listening to records. By his teenage years, Cooper was performing in coffee houses and clubs around Kansas City, honing his skills as a singer, songwriter, and guitarist.
In the 1970s, Cooper landed a record deal with Elektra Records and released his acclaimed self-titled debut album in 1972. Backed by renowned LA studio musicians “The Section,” including Leeland Sklar and Russ Kunkel, the album showcased Cooper’s lyrical depth and virtuoso guitar playing.
For over a decade, he was half of the highly acclaimed duo The Shake Russell/Dana Cooper band who garnered a large following in Texas as well as appearing on Austin City Limits. Through the ’70s and ’80s, he built his reputation on the club circuit while also collaborating with artists like Lyle Lovett, Kim Carnes, Susan Werner, Kim Richey, Hal Ketchum, and more.
Over his 50+ year career, Cooper has amassed a catalog of 30+ albums and continues to tour actively. He released his highly anticipated 32nd studio album, The Ghost of Tucumcari, in May of 2024.
Central to Cooper’s unique artistry is his ability to connect with audiences through his authentic stories and warm stage presence. His decades of experience shine through in the ease and humor he brings to both his playing and storytelling. Though he’s performed with Folk and Americana greats, Cooper has always followed his own musical vision.
“Few artists can claim to make music for 50 years and still do so with the same eagerness and enthusiasm that marked their initial efforts.” — Lee Zimmerman, American Songwriter
Dana Cooper remains driven by his pure love for songwriting and performing, bringing people together through songs. From coffee houses to major concert halls, his singular mix of virtuosity and vulnerability has earned him a lifetime of devoted fans.
During his years as a troubadour, Dana has received many accolades: · In the Spirit of Folk Award · Heritage Musician Award · Best Male Songwriter Award, Indie Acoustic Project · Best Record, The Tennesseean · Nashville Music Award Nomination Best Pop Album · Veteran of the Kerrville Folk Festival
Dana’s music does not belong to one genre. His 2022 CD, I Can Face The Truth, charted on five different radio charts — Americana, Indie Folk, Alt Folk, Alt Country & Roots, and three Best of Year End Charts. That album ranked #22 on “Top Albums for 2022” chart from Americana Highways Listeners — ranking higher than artists like Dolly Parton, Brandi Carlile, Tom Petty, Patty Griffin, Kris Kristofferson, and more.

David Becker at Stage 33 Live
BELLOWS FALLS — Guitarist, composer, and producer David Becker is one of the most highly-regarded jazz musicians working today, combining diverse influences and a passion for the new and different — playing for the present, with an eye on the past and future. He has notched up serious accolades over the past four decades, sharing stages with Miles Davis, Chick Corea, and Michael Brecker (to name just a few) and collaborating with Pat Metheney, John Abercrombie, Mike Stern, and more.
Becker has performed at some of the world’s most prestigious venues, including London’s Barbican Centre, Rotterdam’s De Doelen, Madison Square Garden and Birdland in New York, as well as international festivals including Monterey Jazz Festival, Buenos Aires Jazz Festival, Attila Zoller Festival, and more. He has released 20 albums, many topping the jazz and contemporary music charts.
In addition to Grammy and Emmy nominations, Heritage guitars introduced a David Becker Signature Model at the 2015 Winter NAMM Show, and Homestead Guitars debuted his signature acoustic in 2020. Sheptone produces David Becker Signature Strings.
“A poet on the Jazz Guitar.” — Downbeat
“A virtuoso.” — Gitarre & Bass
“One of the best jazz guitarists ever.” — Zweites Deutsches Fernsehen Television
In 2021, during the pandemic, Becker taped a series for the Space Channel called Planets — a trip around the solar system with music for each planet.
He’s been selling out proper theaters in Japan, Germany, Italy, New Zealand, and America on his solo tour, but also relishes an intimate audience. That’s where 40-seat Stage 33 Live comes in. David Becker will perform his solo show Planets on November 23, 2024 — a captivating audiovisual expedition with projections of the cosmos enhancing his compositions and improvisations… a celestial odyssey aboard a transcendent spacecraft through the sounds, energy, and mystery of the planets of our solar system.

Dylan Patrick Ward Album Release Show at Stage 33 Live, with Ian Galipeau
BELLOWS FALLS — Dylan Patrick Ward is a folk misfit from Vermont’s dirty south… within walking distance from Stage 33 Live, where he played his first venue show. He’s been going gangbusters ever since, gaining increasing respect in the worlds of folk and indie music for his imaginative and poignant songs steeped in irreverent dark humor about outcasts, oddballs, and people on the brink.
He’s been compared to musical humorists John Prine and Loudon Wainwright, and indie-rock / antifolk legends the Mountain Goats and Paul Baribeau.
“He’s funny. He’s also as serious as an ax handle.” – Peter Mulvey
Stage 33 Live, located at 33 Bridge Street in Bellows Falls, VT, is honored to host an album release show for his new full-length, Ne’er-Do-Wells, on Saturday, December 7, 2024, at 7:00 PM. Tickets are $15 in advance through stage33live.com or at the door; advance tickets guarantee entry. Seating is limited to 40; the performances will be recorded and filmed.
Ian Galipeau, who produced the album, is also on the bill. An indie songwriter for hopeful cynics who cry at It’s A Wonderful Life, despise every TV news channel, and are anxious about climate change, he’s not an artist who just writes simple love songs.
