11/10/19: Rupert Wates with Josh Maiocco

Update: DAY OF SHOW!, online tickets sales are now closed. There will be tickets available at the door.

Internationally celebrated singer-songwriter Rupert Wates in Bellows Falls

BELLOWS FALLS — England-born, Oxford University-educated Rupert Wates has released nine acclaimed full-length solo CDs. Since relocating to the USA, two tribute albums to his material have been made by musicians in Nashville and Los Angeles, and he’s won dozens of songwriting awards. He’s been a fulltime songwriter since the late ’90s, when he signed an exclusive publishing deal with London-based Eaton Music.

Wates prefers the intimacy of up-close audiences in small listening rooms rather than large venues and festivals to perform his eclectic mix of acoustic, melodic art/folk flavored with jazz, vaudeville, and cabaret. Stage 33 Live is honored to host the final East Coast date before his tour heads to southern states.

Local favorite Josh Maiocco opens.

“A prime figure in American music.”Folk And Acoustic Music Exchange

“As the former manager of the late Harry Chapin, I’ve heard my share of story songs. Rupert’s are right up there with the best.” — Bob Hinkle

“The economy of a Woody Guthrie ballad with the intricacies of Richard Thompson.”Orlando Sentinel

“Gripping lyrics with great themes and troubling, witty messages.” — Leith Radio, Scotland

11/16/19: CANCELLED Psych Unit

BAND HAD TO CANCEL 🙁 We’re taking the night off.

BELLOWS FALLS — Psych Unit, based in Lebanon, New Hampshire, fuses the best parts of grungy fuzz-and-jangle with the more urgent underpinnings of late-’60s heavy rock — an unlikely combination that works startlingly well. In particular, Terri’s heartfelt, full-throated vocals are refreshingly honest, without affectation or screechiness.

This will be one of Stage 33 Live’s louder shows.

Band members include Addison on drums; Brendan on guitar; Seamus on guitar; Terri on vocals; and Todd on bass.

Door at 6:00 PM, music at 7:00 on Saturday, November 16 — a suggested donation of $5+ at the door. Seating is limited to 40, first-come first-served. There’s also plenty of standing room; attendees may bring their own portable seating if they wish.

The event will be recorded and filmed.

12/15/19: John Stowell & Draa Hobbs

Day of show — ticket presales and masterclass registration are now closed. Seats are still available for both the 2:00 masterclass ($30, includes concert) and the 4:00 concert ($15 at the door).

Jazz guitar duo John Stowell & Draa Hobbs in Bellows Falls

Black Sheep Radio and Stage 33 Live welcome back guitar duo John Stowell & Draa Hobbs for a return engagement of world-class music.

After the first time they played at Stage 33 Live, Draa wrote, “To say this was a great concert would be an understatement. The audience was wonderful, and [to] work with John Stowell, a true master of the instrument, is a tremendous blessing.

John Stowell, based on the West Coast, is influenced as much by pianists and horn players as by guitar players, and his original take on harmony, chords, and improvisation sets him apart. He tours, records, and teaches internationally, and has been a contributing columnist for Downbeat, Guitar Player, Soundcheck (Germany), Guitar Club (Italy), and other influential publications. In 1983, along with David Friesen and Paul and Robin Horn, John toured the Soviet Union in the first American jazz group invited to play public performances in Russia in forty years. The Los Angeles Times says, “Guitarist John Stowell’s style with standards is a delightful departure from the road well traveled. He transcends the label of jazz guitarist.

Draa Hobbs grew up in Chicago and has made his home in Southern Vermont. He studied with the legendary Jimmy Raney, Attila Zoller, Gene Bertoncini, and Peter Lietch, performing in NYC, Burlington, Maine, and points in-between with notable musicians including Don Friedman, Ron McClure, Eliot Zigmund, and Vic Juris. “It’s rare to find someone so passionate about music that it serves as both their spiritual nourishment and their unfettered gift to others… one of the most respected guitarists and teachers in New England.— Eugene Uman, Director of the Vermont Jazz Center

The concert begins at 4:00 PM at 33 Bridge Street in Bellows Falls; only 40 chairs are available. Admission to the performance is $12 in advance, which also reserves a chair up front — or $15 at the door, the remaining chairs being first-come first-served. Attendees are allowed to bring their own portable seating to set up behind the house chairs, or to use in place of their reserved chair if they wish.

Preceding the concert there will be an intimate master class for guitarists and other string players addressing melodic and harmonic minor modes, triads, voicings, comping, etc., to further develop improvisational skills. Limited to not more than ten students; advance registration is recommended. Attendees will receive a 70-page PDF with helpful articles by John Stowell, charts for some of his original tunes, and more. The master class begins at 2:00 PM, and costs $30 which includes concert admission.

This listening event will be recorded and filmed.

BELLOWS FALLS — Innovative guitarist and composer Hiroya Tsukamoto brings his fusion of folk, jazz, and world music to Stage 33 Live in Bellows Falls on December 22 in a special matinee performance for a well-timed break from the holiday rush.

Eclectic and immersive, Tsukamoto takes audiences on an earthy, organic odyssey. In addition to original compositions, his repertoire travels the world of traditional music. While his instrumental abilities are breathtaking, he also connects to audiences with engaging personality.

Tsukamoto leads concerts internationally, including multiple appearances at the Blue Note in New York City and on Japanese National Television. In 2018, he won second place in the International Finger Style Guitar Championship.

Born and raised in Japan, Tsukamoto was awarded a scholarship to Berklee College of Music. In Boston, he formed the group Interoceanico with musicians from different continents, including Latin Grammy-winning Marta Gomez; that group released three acclaimed records. Hiroya has also released three highly regarded solo albums.

1/5/20: Owen Nied

Multi-instrumentalist Owen Nied performs in Bellows Falls

BELLOWS FALLS — After his energetic August set ranging from smoldering to blazing ignited the audience, multi-instrumentalist Owen Nied returns as the main event to the Stage 33 Live listening room in Bellows Falls on January 5.

His original music careens from edgy pop to jazz to blues, rock and hip hop, influenced by artists as diverse as Wes Montgomery, Les Paul, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jack White, Jeff Beck, Brian Wilson, B.B. King, Dick Dale, Tony Bennett, Dave Brubeck, Chet Atkins, and Ella Fitzgerald. In addition to playing solo, Owen fronts the guitar- and horn-driven indie trio The Onlys; plays lead guitar in the jazz-grass band Cats in the Limelight; and is half of the UK-based indie-jazz duo Spooky Tricycle.

Performing since he was nine, he was awarded featured slots at the Ukulele Festival of Great Britain in 2011 and 2012, and has since toured the U.S., England, France, and the Netherlands. This is impressive for anybody, but Owen is just 21 years old and in his senior year at Hampshire College studying music and film.

“You played the hell out of that thing. What was your name again?”
   — Loudon Wainwright III, singer, songwriter, comedian

No opener, this is Owen’s canvas. 7:00 PM start on January 5 at Stage 33 Live, 33 Bridge Street in Bellows Falls, Vermont. Suggested $5+ donation at the door. The performance will be recorded and filmed.

Along with more veteran performers, Stage 33 Live is pleased to host listening events this winter featuring up-and-coming area musicians. When success knocks on their doors, you can impress your friends by telling them you saw them play an odd room in Bellows Falls before they got big.

1/19/20: Heather Pierson Acoustic Trio with Emily Lyons and Josh Maiocco

DAY OF SHOW; ADVANCE TICKET SALES ARE NOW CLOSED. CHAIRS ARE AVAILABLE FOR WALK-UPS. TICKETS ARE $10 AT THE DOOR.

Weather-related road treachery nixed the original date in November. All tickets for the original date will be honored.

Heather Pierson Acoustic Trio at Stage 33 Live

BELLOWS FALLS — The Heather Pierson Acoustic Trio show at Stage 33 Live in November got snowed out, so there will be a second attempt on January 19! They burst into the national folk scene with their 2015 EP, Still She Will Fly, and the title track was that year’s #2 single on folk radio. Their 2017 CD, Singin’, debuted at #1 and was the #11 folk charting album of the year. Heather’s new solo album, Lines and Spaces, came out last month and was her twelfth CD release.

The trio will bring their “traveling music store” of instruments — piano, acoustic guitar, tenor banjo, ukulele, melodica, cornet, dobro, fiddle, mandolin, bass, and maybe more — to Stage 33 Live in a special 2:00 PM matinee performance on January 19. Local up-and-comer Emily Lyons will open with Josh Maiocco.

The trio’s performances feature Heather’s multi-genre songwriting that spans from the streets of New Orleans to the valleys of Appalachia; heartfelt music featuring stirring three-part vocals and earthy charm with Shawn Nadeau on upright bass and Davy Sturtevant on “everything else.”

“Sliding from sweet acoustic Appalachian old-timey vibe with Patty Griffinesque lyrics to brassy New Orleans blues piano with a bone thrown to Bessie Smith.” — DC Bloom, Lone Star Music Magazine

“Great vocals, outstanding instrumental prowess, and stellar songwriting.” — Don Baker, Acoustic Journeys, Asheville, NC

Sunday, January 19; door opens at 1:00, music starts at 2:00 PM. 100% of tickets sales support the musicians. At Heather’s request, tickets are just $10 both in advance and at the door; be sure to thank her. Seating is limited — advance tickets will have chairs reserved until 40 tickets are sold. If any chairs behind the reserved rows are available on show day, those will be available first-come first-served. Attendees are allowed to bring their own portable seating to set up behind the house chairs, or to use in place of their reserved chair.

Tickets held for the snowed-out November show will, of course, be honored.

1/26/20: CANCELLED Cowboys and Angels

Cancelled – they’re moving to Nashville! Stay tuned for whatever develops on this date instead.

Cowboys & Angels are Halle Jade and Kelly Ravin. Kelly was a driving force behind Waylon Speed, the “underground outlaw dirt rock” band that the Washington Post called “a cross between Metallica and the Lumineers, with an unnecessary dash of Prince showmanship.” He’s continued writing, performing, and recording since those days, and his partnership with Halle in Cowboys & Angels delivers a stripped-down, rough-edged, hard-country sweetness with flashes of danger.

1/26/20: Gibson

Gibson sent us a poster for his upcoming show – no cover! Now there are no excuses left. See you there.

Click for huge

Gibson says, “I write songs, and I play guitar while singing those songs.” But it’s more complicated than that. Think Tom Lehrer plus Jonathon Coulton times two minus satire, hyper-strummed yet somehow deeply rooted in throwback coffeehouse folk. Often earnestly dark, but always with an impish grin… geeky, enthusiastic, energetic. There’s no easy way to describe his music, but he’s smart and a load of fun. Get your weird on.

Stage 33 Live is providing the canvas, but doesn’t really know what he’s got up his sleeve. At Gibson’s request, no cover… free show! 7:00 PM start on January 26 at Stage 33 Live, 33 Bridge Street in Bellows Falls, Vermont. The performance will be recorded and filmed.

Stage 33 Live is pleased to host listening events this winter featuring up-and-coming area musicians including Owen Nied, Gibson, Jenna Rice, Emily Lyons, and others. Seeing them play a little unassuming place in Bellows Falls will lock in hipster cred when success knocks on their doors.
