Grant Peeples at Stage 33 Live

BELLOWS FALLS — Grant Peeples is darkly hilarious and dead serious, often at the same time.

He tours coast to coast and is a regular performer at The Woody Guthrie Folk Festival, the 30A Songwriters Festival, and The Florida Folk Festival. He is the recipient of the Focus Foundation Award for Creative Excellence, which cited the “humor, compassion, and wisdom of his songs,” and their “unflinching social insight and cultural acuity.” He is credited with eleven studio albums. He has published three books of poetry.

Tallahassee born and raised, life started mostly simple and then got increasingly complicated. He started writing songs. He moved to Nashville. He left Nashville a year later. He got himself a night club and booked everyone from BB King to the Judds, The Temptations to George Straight, Jerry Lee Lewis to Dionne Warwick, Bonnie Raitt to Jerry Jeff Walker. He went broke in the night club business. He moved to a remote island in the Caribbean off the Miskito Coast of Nicaragua and stayed there for more than a decade before getting the itch back and a $100 guitar. He’s been playing every day and writing songs ever since. A self-described “tree-hugger that watches NASCAR,” Grant is known for his axe-sharp socio-political tunes, raucous humor, and heart-gigging ballads that keep an ever-critical eye on American culture and identity.

Taylor Abrahamse makes hook-laden clawhammer-guitar pop that blissfully floats between the borders of songwriting like a maple leaf caught in a gust above the Ontario prairies… a Paul Simon / Jim Carrey crossbreed with a stunning range, a glint in his eye, and a tip of his grandpa’s old cap.

Taylor is a Kerrville New Folk winner, Canadian Idol and Mariposa finalist, and co-founder of Silverthorn Studios, a much-loved Toronto recording studio. He co-produced his debut album with Eddie Kramer (Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles, KISS, etc). He’s written with platinum-selling songwriters Liz Rodrigues (Eminem, Celine Dion), Jeff Franzel (N’Sync, Rhys Lewis, Josh Groban), and Pam Sheyne (Christina Aguilera). He writes and performs music for movies, television, and branded web projects as well, most notably the feature film About Fate starring Emma Roberts. His original songs for online animated content providers such as Super Planet Dolan, Gardenkeeper Gus & Corus Entertainment have been heard over 20 million times.

Singer-songwriter Steve Hartmann, who was born in Dalat Vietnam towards the end of the Vietnam War and adopted a few months later, has been described him as “the grey” between an acoustic Dave Matthews and Damion Rice. Using effects and looper pedals to highlight his dynamic vocal range and lyrically driven songs, his sound is readily identifiable. He’s opened for major acts like Bryan Adams, Train, and Dispatch, winning over audiences with his captivating stage presence.

Julian Gerstin Sextet at Stage 33 Live

BELLOWS FALLS — Julian Gerstin has spent a lifetime playing music of the Caribbean, Africa, the Middle East, and the U.S. — funk, R&B, and jazz, from jazz’s New Orleans origins to the avant-garde. Along the way he has lived and studied in Martinique, Cuba and Ghana, mastering dozens of percussion instruments and hundreds of traditional rhythms. On a given song you might hear him playing congas, jawbone, an enormous beaded shaker, or the tanbou drum of Martinique, on which he sits and uses one heel to change the pitch.

Gerstin founded the Sextet to bring his wide range of instruments and influences to a jazz setting, where they serve as a platform for his fellow musicians’ creativity. The group includes five of New England’s most creative talents: the electrifying clarinet virtuoso Anna Patton; versatile trumpeter Don Anderson; pianist Eugene Uman, who like Julian ranges across traditions and from funky grooves to experimentalism; bassist Wes Brown, whose career spans gigs with early jazz master Earl “Fatha” Hines to avant-gardists like Wadada Leo Smith and Anthony Braxton; Ben James, who was John Tchicai’s drummer for several years and can both swing and go “out there.”

Think of it as global jazz: music with lively Caribbean drums and sparkling trumpet, velvety clarinet and muscular piano. Music by turns lyrical and humorous, intense and peaceful, grooving and thoughtful, and always surprising.

John John Brown’s “Songs, Stories, & Art — Lessons from Strangers” at Stage 33 Live

BELLOWS FALLS — John John Brown’s “Songs, Stories, & Art — Lessons from Strangers” brings giant comics, iconic photographs, and moving panoramas to the stage, weaving together storytelling songs and visual arts in live performance. The protagonists come from all walks of life — from an aging Vietnam Vet, to a trumpet playing orphan… a married couple debating evolution, to a young man with mental illness wandering the aisles of Walmart.

John John was invited to perform at the 50th Anniversary of Woodstock at Bethel Woods, the original site of the legendary festival. He has been chosen as a Kerrville New Folk winner, an Emerging Artist at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival, and a winner of the South Florida Folk Fest singer/songwriter contest. Steeped in good storytelling and fingerpicking, John John Brown is deep in the singer/songwriter tradition.

Dana Cooper with Cameron Sutphin at Stage 33 Live

BELLOWS FALLS — Nashville-based Dana Cooper is a poetic songwriter, expressive singer, insightful storyteller, and a rousing musician. He’s shared stages with the likes of Lyle Lovett, Jerry Garcia, Melissa Etheridge, Loudon Wainwright, Leo Kottke, Richard Thompson, Townes Van Zandt, and Nancy Griffith. He’s performed on Austin City Limits and Mountain Stage. He’s a recipient of the In the Spirit of Folk Award from Folk Alliance International; the Heritage Musician Award from The Pilgrim Center for the Arts in Kansas City, MO; the Best Male Songwriter Award by Indie Acoustic Project; and is a Veteran Recurring Performer at Kerrville Folk Festival.

His mixture of flat-picking, finger-picking, and percussive strumming is legendary among other guitarists. He’s been performing for nearly six decades, and has released 30 albums. His debut solo album was released in 1973 by Elektra Records.

His dad, a tenant farmer at the time, took him to his first concert back in the ’50s — they rode in a caboose on a freight train into Kansas City MO, then caught a bus to the Ernest Tubb concert at Memorial Hall. By the age of 13 Dana had begun writing his own songs, and by 16 was performing regularly at the Vanguard Coffeehouse and Sign Coffeehouse in Kansas City.

Americana singer-songwriter Cameron Sutphin opens with a classic folk approach combining simple melodies and a lyrical intensity. His debut CD, Heartbreak Town, was recorded in Nashville. He’s shared stages with Drew Kelly, Mark Mandeville and Raianne Richards, and Season 9 runner-up on The Voice, Emily Ann Roberts. He has appeared on the Blue Plate Special in Knoxville TN, and is a recurring performer at The Big E exposition.

Dylan Patrick Ward Album Release Show at Stage 33 Live, with Ian Galipeau

BELLOWS FALLS — Dylan Patrick Ward is a folk misfit from Vermont’s dirty south… more specifically, within walking distance from Stage 33 Live. He played his first venue show there and has been going gangbusters ever since, increasingly respected in the worlds of both folk and indie music.

Equal parts compassionate and irreverent, his songs use catchy melodies and blunt, storytelling lyricism to weave tales of outcasts, oddballs, and people on the brink, with a sharp sense of humor and an instinctive sympathy for the underdog. He’s been compared to great musical humorists like John Prine and Loudon Wainwright, as well as indie-rock / antifolk legends like the Mountain Goats and Paul Baribeau.

In addition to performing solo, he has also teamed up with multi-instrumentalists Nate Goyette and Johnny Gifford to form “Dylan Patrick Ward and the Loveable Losers” to take Dylan’s sweet and sardonic songs to the next level in a mess of sonic delights.

Dylan is releasing two albums in 2024 — one with the Loveable Losers called The Porch Collapses, produced by Johnny Gifford, and a solo effort called Ne’er-Do-Wells, produced by Ian Galipeau. This show is a celebration of the latter’s release.

Ian Galipeau, who produced the album, is also on the bill to open. An indie-rock songwriter for hopeful cynics who cry at It’s A Wonderful Life, despise every TV news channel, and are anxious about climate change, he’s not an artist who can just write a simple love song or breakup song. As a performer, he’s a top-shelf talent (in the American sense of the phrase rather than the British one).
