2/12/23: The Rough & Tumble, High Tea, and Decatur Creek

Award-winning “thriftstore-Americana” duo The Rough & Tumble headline; indie-folk duo High Tea will celebrate their new CD; and tasteful trio Decatur Creek opens at Stage 33 Live, 33 Bridge Street in Bellows Falls VT, at 3:00 PM on Sunday, February 12, 2023. Tickets are $15 in advance through stage33live.com or $20 at the door. Limited seating; recorded and filmed. Read the press release.

The Rough & Tumble and High Tea with Decatur Creek at Stage 33 Live

BELLOWS FALLS — “Thriftstore-Americana” duo The Rough & Tumble — Mallory Graham and Scott Tyler — are songwriters and storytellers who will have an audience in stitches one minute and falling apart at the seams the next. A decade of relentless touring has earned them the right to trot out the haggard road-worn trope, but they defy that stereotype (and pretty much every other) with their upbeat, commanding stage presence and razor-sharp banter, earworm melodies, and heartstring lyrics.

Mallory and Scott had been writing and performing together for years in other projects by the time The Rough & Tumble was born in 2011. Since then, they’ve been crowned The Listening Room Network’s Artist of the Year… have been an Official Showcase Artist for the Southeast Regional Folk Alliance… and were awarded Americana Song of the Year by the Independent Music Awards. They’ve released half a dozen acclaimed albums and EPs.

There may be signature nose flutes on the merch table if they haven’t sold out.

“They sure as hell are peaking high and mighty in this music and songwriting game.”Brian Carroll, Red Line Roots

“The voices of Graham and Tyler — both of which avoid the affected, mannered tone so prevalent in much of today’s Americana — combine seamlessly.”Bill Kopp, Mountain Xpress (Asheville NC)

Indie-folk duo High Tea from Boston will celebrate their new CD, delivering a blend of old blues and new pop with soulful harmonies and smoldering guitar riffs — songs ripe with Americana heartbreak and heat, punctuated with tales of growing up, going wild, and always coming back to the ones you love.

Decatur Creek will open. Beth Eldridge, Doug Farrell, and Jack Henry are each accomplished New Hampshire musicians, singer/songwriters, and performers who together write and play some of the most tasteful original music in the region, with sharp focus on songcraft and vocals.

This is a 3:00 PM matinee on Sunday, February 12, 2023, at Stage 33 Live, 33 Bridge Street in Bellows Falls VT. Tickets are $15 in advance through stage33live.com or $20 at the door. Jesse Peters plus Seven Short Sets at Stage 33 Live

BELLOWS FALLS — Jesse Peters will play a full set following micro-performances by local and regional performers Brian Dade, Carl Beverly, Charlie & Emma, Gillis Mills, Ian Galipeau, Josh Cummings, and Will Stahl (performance order to be determined). A 3:00 PM matinee at Stage 33 Live, 33 Bridge Street in Bellows Falls VT on Sunday, March 5, 2023. Suggested $5+ donation at the door, no advance tickets. Limited seating; performances are recorded and filmed.

Jesse Peters has been a Southern Vermont music scene mainstay since moving back to the area in 2001 after graduating The University of The Arts in Philadelphia with a bachelor’s in jazz guitar and a master’s in music teaching. His styles run the gamut while remaining focused and accessible.

Seven 12-minute-or-less short slots will precede — some familiar players, some new ones. Micro-sets are an engaging and effective way for an audience to discover performers. Impressive talents often materialize out of left field… and sometimes talents that are just plain out of left field. It’s fun.

With the backlog of Covid-postponed shows to reschedule and a growing list of artists waiting for future dates, Stage 33 Live hasn’t run many open mics since the lockdown. When the featured act scheduled for this date needed to withdraw, opportunity opened a door. Jesse, who had been on tap to open, was elevated to the feature slot, and a call was put out for half a dozen performers interested in playing short slots. There were seven responses within 24 hours.

Entry will be by donation at the door ($5 suggested) for the featured performer. Nobody will be turned away for lack of money. 3:00 PM, Stage 33 Live at 33 Bridge Street in Bellows Falls VT on Sunday, March 5, 2023.

The COVID-19 protocol will be the guidelines in effect in the community on show day. Currently the guidance is that masks are optional, which may change without notice. Toussaint St. Negritude at Stage 33 Live

BELLOWS FALLS — Drawing from his life and repertoire as an Afrofuturist, oro-shamanic, Black gay poet and jazz bass clarinetist, Toussaint St. Negritude presents a dynamic solo performance of liberational truth telling, collaboratively pairing the call of his poetry with the intuitive responses of the bass clarinet, and additional instrumentation. Along with the music and poetry, Toussaint further extends the experience visually with his own hand-made hats and accompanying attire. As is the tradition of all Black and queer artistry, Toussaint St. Negritude summons the soul to be held, heard and seen.

Former Poet Laureate of Belfast, Maine, poet, bass clarinetist, and composer Toussaint St. Negritude conjures whole liberations in full tempo. US Poet Laureate Gwendolyn Brooks described his work as “full of sweet sounds and surprises.” Originally from San Francisco, Toussaint has lived and broadly thrived across the African Diaspora, from the sacred mountains of Haiti, to the Coltrane District of North Philadelphia. He, along with bassist Gahlord Dewald, is the leader of the band Jaguar Stereo!, a free-form ensemble of his own poetry and improvisational jazz, and his works have been widely published and recorded for over 40 years. On an alpine sanctuary facing east, Toussaint St. Negritude continues to thrive in the farthest elevations of Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom.

Erin Ash Sullivan and Meadowlark at Stage 33 Live

BELLOWS FALLS — Erin Ash Sullivan was half of the folk duo Edith O. along with Amy Speace in New York City in the ’90s. They performed regularly at NYC venues like the Bitter End and CBGB’s Gallery, and released the album Tattooed Queen in 1998 to critical raves. It’s possible that the band broke up when Erin — a sleep-deprived mother of a six-week-old — forgot to show up for the band’s record release show. After a hiatus to focus on her family and career as an educator, she returned to writing and performing. In 2022, she was selected as a “Most Wanted” performer from Grassy Hill Emerging Artist Showcase at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival, and was John Platt’s selection for the Folk DJ Showcase at NERFA. She was the recipient of the Mark Erelli Judge’s Choice Award in the New England Songwriting Competition; a Songwriter Serenade semifinalist; a finalist in the 2021 Rose Garden Performing Songwriter Competition; and a finalist in the 2021 Mid-Atlantic Song Contest.

Longtime New England singer-songwriter Bonnie Waters teamed up with Howard Roscoe in 2015 to form the folk / pop / Celtic / blues duo Meadowlark, with Bonnie on guitar and vocals, and Howard on harmonica or guitar. From warm ballads to lively uptempo tunes, their songs are inspiring and uplifting. Bonnie was a finalist in the The John Lennon Songwriting Contest for her song “Hushabye”, and Howard, the sound man for a music venue in Cambridge, England for many years, has a soft spot for Mississippi Delta Blues.

Pat, a social worker by day and late-blooming songwriter the rest of the time, writes songs that celebrate human connection, confront loss, and energize the heart and mind. Her influences include Janis Ian, Cat Stevens, Gordon Lightfoot, and Tracy Chapman. “Roads” was crowdfunded on Kickstarter by her fans, and a dynamic team of New England-based musicians and sound engineers performed on and produced it.

Pat will be accompanied for this performance by drummer Jay Osborn, and backing vocalists Melissa D. Moorhouse and Suzanne Waldren, who performed on the album. The concert will have opening sets from Johnny O and Melissa D. Also featured on the album are Luke Selden of Massachusetts on banjo, and Dana Takaki of Connecticut on violin. It was primarily recorded at John Sawyer’s Vermont Recording Studios in Chester, with additional recording by Hugh Birdsall in Connecticut and Brownsville, Vermont’s Josh Hall, who also mixed and mastered the album.

According to Stage 33 Live, “It’s such an honor to be asked to host an album release show. This June 18 concert also happens to be Father’s Day, so people can bring their dads! And the always-fun Bellows Falls Alumni Parade rolls through town after lunch — people can bring their dads to a parade before the show! BELLOWS FALLS — Gail Golec is a professional archaeologist and the creator, writer, editor, producer, and researcher for a podcast called The Secret Life of Death. Lately, however, she’s taken a deep dive into the history and times of the Andrews Inn, which from 1973 to 1984 was located in the current Hotel Windham in Bellows Falls. It was the first gay bar in the state of Vermont.

Gail will premiere the sixth and final episode of the series in a listening event at Stage 33 Live, 33 Bridge Street in Bellows Falls, on Friday, June 23 at 7:00 PM. The previous five episodes are available on The Secret Life of Death website at www.thesecretlifeofdeath.com.

A synopsis of the first five episodes of the “Identity” series exploring the history of Andrews Inn:

In 1973, the Moisis Family of Bellows Falls, VT bought the historic Hotel Windham building, cleaned it up, refurbished it, and opened a nice sit-down restaurant with the look and feel of the town’s former 19th century glory. But this fine dining experience didn’t seem to fly in the blue-collar old mill town.

Then the family found a clientele interested in the good food, dancing, and socializing they were offering.

By 1979 Andrews Inn, now operating as a “gay nightclub” as well as a sit-down restaurant and bar, was doing well. Though the locals didn’t always understand and weren’t always happy about the LGBTQ+ crowd it attracted, they were inclined to leave well enough alone.

That year the Moisis family were looking for buyers, and found some: Thom Herman and Jeremy Youst, an openly gay couple. Openly gay business owners was a first for the town and it wasn’t clear how people would respond. Radical social change doesn’t happen in places like Bellows Falls, VT, does it? Or does it?

After the sale of Andrews Inn to Thom Herman and Jeremy Youst and some of the fervor of the anti-gay protest march that took place in its wake had died down, life got on in Bellows Falls. The Inn, its owners, staff, and patrons had forged a mostly civil, and at times fruitful and supportive, relationship with the town. But in 1982, things began to change.

That year, Andrews Inn was sent reeling from a set-up and raid by authorities, and their business struggled in the aftermath. That was also the year that AIDS broke into the public consciousness.

The sixth and final episode of the series will be premiered by its creator, researcher, writer, editor, producer, and host Gail Golec at a listening event on Friday, June 23 at 7:00 PM at Stage 33 Live, 33 Bridge Street in Bellows Falls.

Stage 33 Live is a casual and intimate industrial-rustic listening room in a former factory hosting local, regional, and national performances and presentations of original material. Masks continue to be optional but welcome at Stage 33 Live events. If community guidelines change, so will the venue’s protocol. A pair of high-capacity air purifiers run during shows. The courtesy of not going out and being a vector if you’re not well has always been a good idea, even before Covid-19.

Stage 33 Live gratefully acknowledges the help of so many individuals without whom none of this would be happening, and institutional support this season from The Island Corporation, the Vermont Arts Council, the Bellows Falls Opera House, the Rockingham Arts & Museum Project, and WOOL-FM that helped fund improvements and maintenance, and generally smooth out a lot of the rough edges. Stage 33 Live is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, and all donations are deductible to the fullest extent. Volunteers run the thing from stem to stern.
